Led by me and a brilliant team of fellow veterans, this is a world-first mission to transform mental health. It’s far more than just a series of long runs, we’re creating a practical framework to equip people with the tools to find a Better State of Mind.
My Personal Metaphor: Redefining What’s Possible
I know this truth because I’ve lived it. After suffering a stroke, I learnt first-hand that the limits we face, both physical and mental, are often far greater in our minds than in reality. Having already pushed the boundaries of human capability, becoming the first disabled person to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, I am undertaking this mission to create a powerful, undeniable metaphor for overcoming personal hardship. My goal is to inspire millions to better support their own mental and physical wellbeing with an evidence-backed, proactive approach.
The Stakes: Why This Mission Cannot Wait
The mental health crisis has reached staggering levels. Over one billion people worldwide are struggling, and the need for innovative awareness and support is urgent. For those who have served, the battle is even harder. These figures underpin the vital need for the Better States of Mind movement:
- Veteran Suicide: Suicide rates among US veterans are higher than among non-veterans.
- PTSD Prevalence: of veterans will experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in their lifetime, which is significantly higher than the in the general population.
- Global Scope: Over 1 billion people worldwide were living with a mental disorder in 2019.
- Physical Health Risk: People with depression face a higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
My mission is simple yet profound: To transform mental health narratives by showcasing resilience and proving that a fulfilling life and great achievements are possible, even after adversity.
The Framework: Securing a Lasting Mental Health Movement
I’m undertaking the impossible: running 50 marathons in 50 US states in 50 consecutive days. This challenge is specifically designed to seize global attention and generate extraordinary momentum. The physical feat secures the platform; the lasting movement delivers the change.
The miles are only the beginning
50 States Engagement: We will engage communities throughout the entire United States, ensuring the conversation is grassroots and global.
120-Day Follow-up: The core of my commitment is the post-run engagement period, which includes a dedicated 120-day follow-up programme to embed the mental health movement.
The Technology: Our partnership with INVI MindHealth (a pioneering mental health technology company with a team forged through service—military, medical, and mental health) is key. They provide the tools and knowledge for people to take a proactive approach to their mental health
The People Behind the Miles
I can’t do this alone. This monumental expedition is only possible with a team of fellow veterans who have all navigated their own extraordinary adversity. We are a living example that great achievement is possible post-trauma.
